MOST of the Busselton Jetty has been excluded from the new marine park announced in Yallingup on Saturday. The Premier Colin Barnett and Environment Minister Bill Marmion announced details of Ngari Capes Marine Park, which will cover about 124,000ha, from Geographe Bay to Augusta.
Mr Marmion said the only section of the jetty, at the tip, where the shire already had a fishing exclusion zone, would be included in the new marine park.
He said important marine habitats and some of the South-West’s top surfing locations would be preserved and protected under the new marine park to be created by the State Government.
The marine park will include the waters between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin.
It will balance both recreational pursuits and protect important marine life by classifying areas into different zones.
“The creation of this marine park will help conserve one of Western Australia’s most remarkable marine areas,” Mr Barnett said.
“It is also one of the State’s most popular tourism destinations – the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park adjoining the marine park receives more than two million visits annually, and is the most popular national park in WA.
“As I have previously said, arguably the most important benefit of this period of economic growth is to ensure the protection of the State’s unique environment for future generations.
